Corduroy is a durable fabric characterized by vertical ridges, or “cords,” that are typically made by weaving extra sets of yarn into the fabric.
The word “corduroy” comes from the French term “corde du roi,” meaning “cloth of the king.” However, experts are not in complete agreement about that origin.
It became popular in Europe during the 18th century, particularly in England, where it was used for workwear and country clothing. Corduroy experienced a resurgence in popularity during the 20th century, becoming associated with casual and comfortable clothing styles.
The width of the corduroy ridges, known as the “wale,” can vary, with wider wales being more common in casual clothing and narrower wales in more formal attire. Jumbo cord, needle cord and pin cord are just a few examples of different corduroy fabrics varying in its wale.
Corduroy is commonly made from cotton, but it can also be blended with other fibers such as polyester, rayon, or spandex for added stretch and durability (Note: Plastic fibers such as Spandex, Polyester, Elasthan are harmful for the environment & wearer).
